What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a treatment where you breathe oxygen in a pressurised chamber.

At Recovery at the Hub, our 1.5 ATA HBOT chamber provides a controlled environment where increased atmospheric pressure allows you to breathe a higher concentration of oxygen than you would under normal conditions.

HBOT is used in medical settings for specific clinical indications, while wellness and recovery users may choose it as part of a broader approach to recovery and wellbeing.

How It Works

During a normal day, oxygen is carried around your body primarily by red blood cells.

When you enter a hyperbaric chamber, the pressure is gradually increased. At the same time, you breathe oxygen. The increased pressure allows more oxygen to dissolve into the blood plasma and other body fluids.

This increases the amount of oxygen available to tissues while you are undergoing the session.

A typical session involves:

Pressurisation - the chamber gradually increases pressure. You may experience a sensation similar to being on an aeroplane during take-off.

Oxygen exposure
- once the desired pressure is reached, you relax and breathe oxygen for the prescribed period.

Decompression - the pressure is gradually reduced back to normal before you leave the chamber.

Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy safe?

For appropriately screened clients, HBOT is generally considered well tolerated when delivered using suitable equipment and correct operating procedures.

At Recovery at the Hub, clients will be screened before treatment and provided with clear instructions regarding the safe use of the chamber.

Possible effects during or after a session can include:

• Ear pressure or discomfort
• Difficulty equalising pressure in the ears
• Temporary changes in hearing
• Sinus pressure
• Temporary light-headedness or fatigue
• Claustrophobia or anxiety
• In rare circumstances, oxygen-related complications or other pressure-related injuries

Do not enter the chamber if you are unwell without checking with our team.

Certain medical conditions, medications and circumstances may make HBOT unsuitable. Anyone with a significant medical condition, recent surgery, pregnancy, respiratory condition, ear/sinus problems or other concerns should seek appropriate medical advice before treatment.

Our team will complete the appropriate screening before your first session.

Pre-treatment screening - Before your first session, our team will explain the process and check that HBOT is appropriate for you. You will be asked about relevant medical conditions, medications and any factors that could affect your ability to safely equalise pressure.
purple check icon
Preparing for your session - You will receive clear instructions on what you can and cannot take into the chamber. Comfortable clothing is recommended.

Entering the chamber - Once you are comfortably positioned, the chamber will be closed and the pressure will gradually increase. You may notice pressure in your ears — similar to the sensation experienced during take-off or landing on an aircraft. Our team will explain techniques such as swallowing or gently equalising your ears.

During the session - Once operating pressure is reached, you can relax while the session takes place. Our team will remain available and monitor the session according to the chamber's operating procedures.

Decompression - At the end of the session, pressure is gradually reduced. You may experience another change in ear pressure during this stage. Once the chamber returns to normal pressure, you can leave and continue with your day.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions - Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

ATA means atmospheres absolute, a measure of pressure. A chamber operating at 1.5 ATA provides approximately one-and-a-half times normal atmospheric pressure at sea level. The increased pressure is what allows more oxygen to dissolve into the blood plasma and body fluids.
The most noticeable sensation is usually pressure in the ears as the chamber pressurises and depressurises. It can feel similar to being on an aeroplane. Once you reach the operating pressure, most people find the experience comfortable and relaxing.
Session length depends on the chamber protocol and your individual treatment plan, however its typically 60mins. Allow additional time around the session for preparation, pressurisation and decompression. Your RATH team will tell you the expected duration when you book.
HBOT can be incorporated into a wider post-training recovery routine. However, it should not be used to self-treat an acute injury or medical condition. If you have suffered an injury or have significant pain, swelling or other symptoms, seek appropriate medical advice.
There is no single frequency that is right for everyone. Frequency depends on the purpose of the sessions, your individual circumstances and the chamber protocol. For general wellness and recovery, we recommend discussing your goals with the RATH team so an appropriate routine can be considered.
